Short, regular breaks from your writing (or any task at hand) can help keep you focused when you are actually working. Are you able to cut everything (that isn’t your writing) out during your writing time? Take a short break And most jobs do not allow cell phones while working. They show up on time, work their shifts, take breaks every few hours, and go home after they clock out. When working a “normal” job, most people take it seriously. If the goal is to establish a career and become a successful, full-time author who pays their bills with their royalty earnings, you should treat your writing like a job. OmmWriter and FocusWriter are both great tools to help keep distractions on your computer at bay. Like turning off the internet or disallowing certain apps during your writing time. But if it is your computer, you will want to get more creative. And how easily can they be removed? If the distraction is something easy, like the radio or television being on, that is easy enough to turn off. Unplug, turn off, or move distractionsĪsk yourself if you can get rid of your distractions. Keep this in mind but avoid letting every distraction become an emergency. Emergencies will happen and will/may require immediate attention. If people call or text you during your writing time, send them a quick note that you are busy but will get back to them when you can.īut flexibility is also good to have. ![]() This helps connect your writing and personal lives and gives people a clear option. To avoid people feeling jilted, ask them to make plans in advance. There are some cute ones on Amazon or Etsy that are worth a look. And these signs do not have to be all doom and gloom. This couples with “setting firm boundaries” with people, and it is always important to gently remind people of those boundaries, but some people need a visual cue. And it might be especially helpful for people who live with other people or who work in a shared space. Putting up a “do not disturb sign” may sound passive aggressive, but if it’s the only way to keep people at bay, then it might be a good option. That way, people in your house will have availability to your writing schedule and you will have your schedule on your phone when making plans on-the-go. Magnetize your writing schedule to the refrigerator and add it to your phone to keep it handy. But some people will need a reminder or two, and while it is good practice to be kind and gentle with these reminders, I suggest against giving in to others’ wants. Most people will respect these boundaries and understand. Take the time to talk to the people in your life (family, spouse, friends, etcetera) and let them know your plans. Setting firm boundaries with people is essential in almost every part of life-including your writing life. (Example: If I finish writing this chapter, I can go get my favorite cream puff.) Set firm boundaries Go out to breakfast or dinner with friendsĭetermine what looks like the best rewards for your situation and create an “If I finish… Then I get…” list. ![]() Watch a new movie (at home or in theater) You could also create different types of rewards, like pens, notebooks, a new book or game, or something else-the rewards are literally endless and completely customizable. ![]() The point here, though, is that you need rewards that will help you stay motivated to keep going, to keep writing, and to keep finishing writing projects (chapters, scenes, whole books). Rewarding yourself with a comparable “gift” might look something like a slice of chocolate cake at the end of your writing time or dinner at a new restaurant or a night playing video games with friends after a full week of good writing habits. But the important part is that you both want to accomplish the goal and that the reward is strong enough to motivate you to accomplish the goal. These rewards can be big or small, or you can vary them depending on the goal in question. If you are feeling unmotivated, one way to motivate yourself is to create a rewards system for achieving your goals. ![]()
